I grew up playing music through high school and played in bands for years beyond that. In my 30’s I began leading worship with some larger churches in Northern Virginia and Kansas City which lasted for 5 or 6 years.
Then poof, the music stopped.
This wasn’t a decision I made but just a change in priorities, life, family, etc…
I literally put music on the shelf for 20 years.
In 2023 I found that working 16 plus hours per day was not exactly the best way of taking care of yourself. So after some prompting from a personal coach, I decided to find a way to find some “ME” time. This is when I decided I wanted to teach myself to play guitar. Well that progressed pretty quickly and I found that I could play along with backing tracks.
Well one track turned into three, six, eight, twelve, fifteen, twenty and more! At that point I realized I could play a gig so I bought a simple PA system and began asking for an opportunity to play.
Here I am at 61 years old out hustling gigs like I was 21!
Well, I got a shot, playing for free, to be expected when you have nothing to share!
Well this progressed and I began writing lyrics, building chord structures, arranging, and ultimately recording.
I can’t get enough of it! I haven/t quit the day job but sure have made the “ME” time a priority. I have found great joy in all of this and seeing the reaction from those attending my gigs!
